Death by Chocolate

Help bring Exploration Place’s annual fundraiser to life! Saturday, March 4. Volunteers can help with set up, work during the event, or help reset the museum post event.

For those working at the event itself, all volunteers will work from 5 pm to 10 pm and must be at least 18 years of age. Shifts and requirements for set up and tear down vary. See link below.

Roar & Snore

Be a Roarin’ Party Host and help set up the event, welcome and check in guests, oversee the pizza party and more! Scavenger Hunt Hosts will help set up, run, and reset the scavenger hunt. Breakfast hosts will distribute breakfast packs and coffee to guests at the end of the event and help reset the museum.

February 24, March 31 and/or April 28
Various shifts on Friday night or Saturday morning.

Guest Experiences

Guest Experiences

You could help with check-in for field trips, members or other guests. If you are willing, we can train you to use the ticketing system to sell tickets and help with other tasks. The position involves answering phones and assisting guests as needed. You will receive training with one of our guest experiences associates and supervisors.

Birthday Parties

Assist the Guest Experiences department with our fantastic birthday parties. Volunteers will be notified as soon as a birthday party is reserved, so they have advanced planning time. Parties are scheduled on the weekends and occasional weekday nights. Volunteers will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled party for setting up and stay 30 minutes after the party for clean-up.

Grounds Maintenance

Exploration Place and its grounds cover over 20 acres along the Arkansas River. Debris and unwanted plant material removal is vital to maintaining the natural beauty of our property. Tree and bush trimming and maintenance are also needed in the spring and fall, as well as maintaining the beach-like setting of our sandbar.

Why Volunteer

As an Exploration Place volunteer, you will:

  • Work with enthusiastic staff and volunteers.
  • Gain admission to all exhibits and The Dome shows with a volunteer card.
  • Get a 20 percent discount in the Explore Store and the snack bar.
  • Have access to early viewings of special exhibits, lectures and science shows and specialized training pertaining to volunteer duties.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers at Exploration Place must be 14 years of age or older. Exploration Place does mandatory background checks with the KBI on all adult volunteers.  If you have questions about volunteering, please contact Sai Powers at (316) 660-0603 or contact us online.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Floor Programming

    Our guest experience is enhanced through interactive fun. The position involves hands-on science experiments located on carts, in our Live Science Theater or in your hands. There is no need to be a scientist as volunteers will be provided training and support on each individual activity. Some of the demonstration subjects you can be trained on include bioluminescence, electricity, energy, slime, aerodynamics and much more. In some of the demonstrations, we work with dry ice, liquid nitrogen, slime and all sorts of other cool things!

  • Kansas and Kansas in Miniature Docent

    Assist guests through Kansas exhibits and activities, including Kansas in Miniature. Preferred hours are 10 am to 2 pm Tuesday through Saturday and 12 pm to 3 pm on Sunday.

  • Guest Services Administration Assistance

    Help us reach our guests and member population by assisting with folding, sorting and stuffing different materials to ensure Exploration Place reaches our community. Projects are available as needed, and volunteers will be notified of need. Some may require short notice.

  • Education Program Assistant

    Education program volunteers will assist Exploration Place educators in programs for school groups and the general public.

  • Castle Docent/Monitor

    This position monitors guests, assists with keeping props and costumes arranged for guest use and engages guests in the different activities. Training in Exploration Place procedures is necessary for this position.

  • Guest Experiences Volunteer

    You could help with check-in for field trips, members or other guests. If you are willing, we can train you to use the ticketing system to sell tickets and help with other tasks. The position involves answering phones and assisting guests as needed. You will receive training with one of our guest experiences associates and supervisors.

  • Traveling Exhibit Docent

    Assist Exploration Place guests with activities and exhibit elements. This position requires attending special training sessions for some exhibits as well as training with the floor programming specialist.

  • Exhibit Set Up and Tear Down Assistant

    Volunteers assist with traveling exhibit set up and tear down. You will work alongside Exploration Place exhibit staff and be trained by traveling exhibit staff.

  • Events

    Exploration Place holds several events during the year, and it is always helpful to have volunteers that are willing to help. Some events are weekly, like Food Truck Thursday. You could monitor outside games, provide information on programs for guests or help with set up and tear down.

  • Birthday Party Assistant

    Assist the Guest Experiences department with our fantastic birthday parties. Volunteers will be notified as soon as a birthday party is reserved, so they have advanced planning time. Parties are scheduled on the weekends and occasional weekday nights. Volunteers will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled party for setting up and stay 30 minutes after the party for clean-up.

  • Summer Camp Assistant

    Summer camps run from 9 am to 4 pm. Volunteers are requested to work between the hours of 8:15 am and 5 pm. Volunteers can sign up for one week of camp or work a morning or afternoon shift on one or more of the camp weeks. Volunteers will assist with the set up of daily activities, registration check-in and lunchtime, as well as activities.

  • Custodial Assistant

    Exploration Place is a 100,000-square-foot museum with many windows. This position assists with dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and yes, “We do windows!”
