Volunteers are an integral part of fulfilling our mission and perform a variety of jobs to keep the entire organization on the path to making science fun for everyone!

As an Exploration Place volunteer you will:

  • Participate in activities that enhance your personal growth while serving a valued role to the museum and science education and exploration.
  • Work with enthusiastic staff and volunteers.
  • Gain admission to all exhibits and dome theater shows with a volunteer card.
  • Get a 20% discount in the Explore Store and the snack bar.
  • Have access to early viewing of traveling exhibits, lectures and science shows and specialized training pertaining to volunteer duties.

Volunteers at Exploration Place must be 14 years of age. Exploration Place does mandatory background checks with the KBI on all adult volunteers.

Volunteer Positions

Floor Programming

Our guest experience is enhanced through interactive fun. hands-on science experiments located on carts, in our Live Science Theater or in your hands. No need to be a scientist as volunteers will be provided training and support on each individual activity. Some of the demonstration subjects you can be trained on include bioluminescence, electricity, energy, slime, aerodynamics and much more. In some of the demonstrations we work with dry ice, liquid nitrogen, slime and all sorts of other cool things!

Kansas and Kansas in Miniature Docent

Assist guests Kansas exhibits and activities, including Kansas in Miniature. Preferred hours are between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12 – 3 p.m. Sunday.

Guest Services Administration Assistance

Help us reach our guests and member population by helping with folding, sorting and stuffing different materials to help Exploration Place reach our community. Projects are available as needed and volunteers will be notified of need. Some may require short notice.

Education Program Assistant

Education program Volunteers will assist Exploration Place Educators in programs for school groups and general public.

Castle Docent/Monitor

Monitor guests, assist with keeping props and costumes arranged for guest use and engage guests in the different activities. Training in Exploration Place procedures is necessary for this position.

Guest Experiences Volunteer

You could help with check in for field trips, members or other guests. If you are willing, we can train you to use the ticketing system to sell tickets and help with other tasks. Answer phones and assist guests as needed. You will receive training with one of our Guest Experiences Associates and Supervisors.

Traveling Exhibit Docent

Assist Exploration Place guests with activities and exhibit elements. This position requires attending special training sessions for some exhibits as well as training with the Floor Programming Specialist.

Exhibit Set Up and Tear Down Assistant

Volunteers assist with traveling exhibit set up and tear down. You will work alongside Exploration place exhibit staff and be trained by traveling exhibit staff.

Special Events

Exploration Place holds several special events during the year and it is always helpful to have volunteers that are willing to help. Some events are weekly like Food Truck Thursday. You could monitor outside games, provide information on programs for guests or help with set up and tear down.

Birthday Party Assistant

Assist the Guest Experiences department with our fantastic birthday parties. Volunteers will be notified as soon as birthday party is reserved so they have advanced planning time. Parties are scheduled on the weekends and occasional weekday nights. Volunteers will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to scheduled party for set up, and stay 30 minutes after the party for clean up.

Summer Camp Assistant

Summer Camps run from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Volunteers are requested to work between the hours Of 8:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers can sign up for one week of camp or work a morning or afternoon shift on one or more of the camp weeks. Volunteers will assist with set up Of daily activities, registration check in, lunch time, as well as activities.

Grounds Maintenance

Exploration Place and its grounds cover over 20 acres along the Arkansas River. Debris and unwanted plant material removal is vital to maintain the natural beauty of our property. Tree and bush trimming and maintenance is also needed in spring and fall as well as maintaining the beach like setting of our sandbar.

Custodial Assistant

Exploration Place is a 100,000 square feet museum with many windows. This position assists with dusting, sweeping, vacuuming and yes, “we do windows!”
