As parents and caregivers, we know you are always looking for somewhere to bring kids that will entertain and educate. Exploration Place fits both those categories. However, sensory overload can hinder the experience for some—until now.
Exploration Place is a bustling science and discovery museum, offering entertainment and activities for kids and adults alike. Children are encouraged to learn through play and all the senses. The active atmosphere can mean sensory overload for some of our guests with sensory sensitivities. To provide an inclusive play space for all, we’ve enhanced a more sensory-friendly environment by partnering with KultureCity.
What Causes Sensory Overload?
Sensory overload is when an individual becomes overwhelmed by crowds, lights, sounds, smells, or other external factors. Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation can happen to anyone at any age but are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions.
KultureCity aims to allow all individuals a chance to fully participate in all aspects of life and has successfully removed barriers that can prevent those with sensory sensitivities from enjoying public spaces. Their program and partnership mean that Exploration Place is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities to have the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible. Whether it’s needing a quiet place to decompress or grabbing a complimentary sensory bag, Exploration Place’s sensory-inclusive accommodations have you covered.
By partnering with KultureCity, our guests can enjoy a more sensory-friendly environment where everyone can thrive. This includes KultureCity sensory bags, designated quiet spaces, and staff training to ensure all guests get the most out of their time at Exploration Place.
KultureCity Sensory Bags
The complimentary KultureCity sensory bags include noise-canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs), fidget tools and verbal cue cards. These items are available to all guests. Inquire at the front desk when checking in so you’re prepared if sensory overload ensues.
Quiet Areas
We have designated quiet areas at Exploration Place that are distinctly marked if you or your little one need to take a moment away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the building. The spaces are marked on our building directory and our staff can help you locate these areas as well.
Trained Staff
Our staff has been trained by KultureCity professionals to handle a sensory overload situation, to help identify guests with sensory needs and to point them to valuable resources. Our staff members can assist with checking out a sensory bag, finding a designated quiet space and proper utilization of the sensory tools in the KultureCity sensory bag.
KultureCity App
Before visiting Exploration Place, families can download the free KultureCity App to view available sensory features and how to access them. Also on the App is the Social Story which provides a preview of what to expect while enjoying your time at Exploration Place.
