*New Event*A Movie Night Made for Makers

If watching a movie feels better with a project in your hands, you’re in the right place. But instead of doing this on your couch at home, we’re bringing it into a theater.

Join us for a night of crafting while a movie plays on the big screen. Bring whatever small project you’re in the middle of and settle in alongside other makers who get it. It’s relaxed, cozy and quietly social. The kind of night where your hands stay busy, your mind slows down and it’s exactly as chill as it sounds.

What Guests Are Saying

Last night was an awesome time! Great movie and great people. I hope this continues for a long time.

It was our first time and we loved it! Will definitely be back!

Exploration Place staff went above and beyond!!! Door prizes, free craft, movie themed treats. Wow. Wonderful evening, I will be back.

It was GREAT and very well organized. From the doors opening a bit early, to snacks and drinks being available, to the how raffle prices were explained, etc! Thank you for an excellent experience!

The staff and volunteers do an amazing job with the event including the extra fun bonus of a premovie craft and door prizes. I hope this continues for many months.

Love this event so much! Thank you for including subtitles.

My daughter came with me this time and both of us had a BLAST! Thanks for doing this.

I just LOVE it and hope it continues

This is an amazing event. My two daughters and I have attended [multiple times]. We love the make it take it.

My friend and I loved it!! Such a fun idea.

I loved this, it was so much fun! I also liked the fact I got to see a movie I missed seeing in the theatre the first time. Even better that I got to craft while watching it.

October 27 Practical Magic

Practical Magic

Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder. Keep rosemary by your garden gate. Plant lavender for luck and fall in love whenever you can.

Raised on midnight margaritas, whispered spells and a family curse that makes love feel dangerous, Practical Magic became the ultimate cozy fall comfort movie long before that was a trend. Sally and Gillian Owens couldn’t be more different, but together they carry the heart of a story about sisterhood, grief, healing and finding your way back to yourself. Between the witchy aesthetics, candlelit kitchens and endlessly quotable moments, it’s the kind of film people revisit every autumn like a ritual. Warm, funny and just a little chaotic in the best way. (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn)

PG-13 | 1h 44m

November 17 Sister Act

Sister Act

Sister Mary Clarence, your choir has become… noticeable.

When lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier is forced to hide out in a convent after witnessing a crime, she turns a quiet choir into an unforgettable act of joy, rebellion and powerhouse music. Sister Act is pure feel-good nostalgia — full of chaotic energy, huge laughs and the kind of soundtrack that makes people want to sing along instantly. Beneath all the comedy is a story about friendship, finding confidence and bringing people together in unexpected ways. Fun, heartfelt and impossible not to smile through. (Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Harvey Keitel, Mary Wickes)

PG | 1h 40m

December 8 White Christmas

White Christmas

The best things happen while you’re dancing.

Two former soldiers turned entertainers team up with a sister act and head to a snowy Vermont inn, where the holidays become bigger, warmer and more emotional than anyone expected. White Christmas is pure vintage comfort — glowing stage lights, old-Hollywood charm, giant musical numbers and the kind of cozy nostalgia people revisit every December. Beneath the comedy and romance is a story about friendship, loyalty and showing up for the people who changed your life. Timeless, sentimental and impossible not to smile through. (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen)

    Make New Friends

There is no better ice breaker than shared interests.

This night is intentionally designed to make it easier to connect. The first part of the evening is unhurried, with time to get settled, grab snacks and ease into the space. We’ll kick things off with a short welcome and a few light, low-pressure ways to break the ice before the movie begins.

Whether you come with a friend or show up solo, the goal is simple: create together, relax together and make it easier to leave having met at least one new person.

FAQ
  • What kind of craft can I bring?

Craft Cinema works best with crafts that you can hold in your lap and don’t create much mess. Because you’ll be sitting in a theater seat, there won’t be a table or access to an electrical outlet available. Don’t forget your headlamp or portable work light, if you have one!

  • Will concessions be available?

Yes! Snack Lab will have drinks, candy and concessions available for purchase (card/debit only). Outside food and drink are allowed in the theater, and there are cup holders on the armrests. You are more than welcome to bring dinner with you. No alcohol or glass containers, please.

  • Can I bring my child with me?

This event is for 13-year-olds and older.

  • What happens if I buy a ticket and can't make it?

There are no refunds for special events. If you are unable to attend, tickets may be transferred to another date (if available) or to another guest. Contact us at 316-660-0600 or [email protected] if you need help with your ticket.

  • How dark will the room be?

To see the movie, the front half of the theater will have to be somewhat dim. We’ll leave as much light over the seats as we can. Please feel free to bring battery-operated or portable work lights, headlamps, etc.

  • What does the schedule of events look like?

Check-in will begin at 5:30 pm.

You’ll head straight to Kemper Theater (where we do our live science shows, near the castle) to find your seat and get settled. Seats are first-come, first-served. There’s a very good chance that the theater will be full, so please anticipate that you might not have any empty seat(s) next to you.

You will have time to get settled, unpack your supplies, get snacks and visit the restroom before we start.

At 6:15 pm we will do opening remarks and a few fun icebreaker activities.

The movie will begin at 6:30 pm.

After the movie, there will be time to pack up your supplies and visit the restroom before you go.

  • Will there be tables?

No, there will not be tables available. The rows of seats are too narrow and tables would create a safety hazard. There is open floor space in the theater, but if we had guests seated at tables in this area, it would block others’ view of the movie. Unfortunately, that isn’t an option either.

You are welcome to bring a lap desk! We will have clipboards and “lunchroom” trays available to borrow.
